Domestic Yak Joins Utica Zooβs Animal Collection
The Utica Zoo is pleased to introduce their newest animal exhibit in time for the new year! Within the Asian Realm and along the boardwalk overlooking the City of Utica, one will find two female domestic Yaks, Senali and Shehariah, who have quickly made the Utica Zoo their new home.
A βsneak peekβ video was shared on the zooβs social media pages in late December, announcing the arrival of a new animal with footage showing the trailer approaching, their new barn, and even the very first footprints they left in the snow. This content sparked engagement from the community, who shared their guesses or even hopes as to who this new species could in fact be.
The zoo is excited to finally divulge this unrevealed information and encourage guests to visit this species during their best season; winter. Domestic Yaks are perfectly adapted to harsh and cold environments, much of which Utica, NY, sees every winter! Senali and Shehariah are equipped with superior, multi-layered coats with very minimally exposed skin, allowing them to trap warmth and remain insulated, even while covered in snow.
One can view this impressive species during the winter any day between 10:00am and 4:30pm, as the Utica Zoo is open 7 days a week and 363 days a year.
