During Women’s Health Week, MMRI is spreading awareness for conditions that affect women disproportionately and the work we do to help combat these diseases.

Here are some quick facts about diseases MMRI study that affect women:

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States and can affect women at any age. In 2021, it was responsible for the deaths of 310,661 women—or about 1 in every 5 female deaths (CDC).
  • Most people with lupus are women with the CDC estimating that 9 out of every 10 people with lupus are women. Additionally, women ages 15 to 44 years have the highest risk of developing SLE (CDC).

Heart Disease: MMRI is researching heart disease in hopes that we can find a better way to treat and hopefully cure it. A few cardiovascular conditions that MMRI research are adult stage heart failure, arrhythmias, diabetes, congenital heart disease, and thrombosis. Using molecular imaging techniques, novel therapeutic agents, targeted drug delivery methods, and advanced gene therapy, MMRI’s scientists are dedicated to improving heart health and finding lifesaving treatments for these ailments. If you would like to learn more about the individual conditions that we research, visit mmri.edu/heart-disease-research.

Lupus: Our scientists are focusing on identifying novel genes and pathways involved in the development of autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), by studying the molecular targets, impacting these genetic alterations. We aim to advance diagnostic techniques and develop innovative therapy to target and treat more effectively, improving treatment options and paving the way for potential cures.
