“La Sonnambula,” Vincenzo Bellini — 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 — New Production!
Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. This operatic gem from one of the great masters of melody is a benchmark of extraordinary vocalism. The soloists and chorus interact often in this opera, an unusual feature of Bellini’s works and one that successfully reflects the idea of a tight village community. Deeper than a comedy, but in no way a tragedy, “La Sonnambula” reaches its conclusion through genuine, poignant character development, rather than by intrigue or farce.
“La Bohème,” Giacomo Puccini — 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8
At first glance, “La Bohème,” the world’s most popular opera, is the definitive depiction of the joys and sorrows of love and loss; on closer inspection, it reveals the deep emotional significance hidden in the trivial things—a bonnet, an old overcoat, a chance meeting with a neighbor—that make up our everyday lives. Franco Zeffirelli’s picture-perfect production brings 19th-century Paris to the Met stage as Puccini’s young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life.
“Arabella,” Richard Strauss — 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22
Richard Strauss’ elegant romance “Arabella” brings the glamour and enchantment of 19th-century Vienna to cinemas worldwide in a sumptuous production by legendary director Otto Schenk that “is as beautiful as one could hope” (“The New York Times”). Set in Vienna around 1860, the historical moment that drives the plot is the situation of a fading landed gentry attempting to keep up appearances while somewhat adrift in the modern urban melting pot. The score of “Arabella” is beautiful and charming, with a wealth of lyrical melody perfectly attuned to the demands of the story and characters. Strauss calls upon the orchestra to create unforgettable effects, nowhere more notable than in the touching final scene, in which the listener is transported into a musical experience of forgiveness, wisdom, and the burgeoning of true love.
“Andrea Chénier,” Umberto Giordano — 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13
Giordano’s passionate tragedy stars tenor Piotr Beczała as the virtuous poet who falls victim to the intrigue and violence of the French Revolution. Giordano’s great tragedy blends verismo’s focus on the raw emotions of everyday people with the spectacle of historical grand opera. By focusing on individuals caught up in a wildly dramatic moment in history, the opera manages to be both human and epic in scope.
