The Brain and Heart: An Essential Partnership

The brain and heart share one of the most important partnerships in the human body. Although they perform different roles, they work together continuously to support the body’s overall health.

Connections between the brain and the heart:

· The heart supplies the brain with the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function.

· The brain depends on a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood: even a brief interruption can affect how it works.

· The brain sends signals that help regulate heart rate, blood pressure, and the body’s response to physical activity, stress, and emotion.

· This constant communication enables the heart and brain to work together to meet the body’s changing needs.

Because these organs are so closely connected, disease(s) affecting one can often influence the other.

Understanding these biological connections enables researchers to develop better approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease. The more we learn about the relationship between the brain and the heart, the better equipped we are to prevent disease, improve treatments, and enhance quality of life.
