RESOLUTION OF THE GREATER UTICA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN SUPPORT OF SUSPENSION OF STATE SALES TAX ON GASOLINE

WHEREAS,  members of the New York State Senate have advanced a proposal for inclusion in the state’s annual budget that would suspend the state sales tax on gasoline until the end of calendar year 2022;  and

WHEREAS,  the suspension of the state sales tax would immediately reduce the price of gasoline at the pump by 48 cents per gallon;  and

WHEREAS,  the current high price of gasoline across the state and across the country is imposing severe hardship on drivers and is increasing the cost of goods and services that rely on transportation for any portion of manufacturing and distribution; and

WHEREAS,  New York Governor Kathy Hochul has not yet expressed any interest publicly in supporting this proposal; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce supports the State Senate budget proposal to suspend the state sales tax on gasoline through the end of the calendar, and urges Governor Hochul to support this proposal for adoption. The Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce further urges the Governor and Legislature to reduce or eliminate the state sales tax on gasoline on a permanent basis.
