Founded in 1958 by the New York State Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, MMRI began with a mission to fight rheumatic diseases. Today, the Institute remains an independent, cutting-edge facility, collaborating globally while staying rooted in the Mohawk Valley.

MMRI’s research spans some of the most pressing health challenges of our time:

• Heart disease research – MMRI scientists investigate heart disease, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, thrombosis and much more to find the genetic and environmental causes to cardiovascular disease.
• Neurocognitive Disorders – The scientists investigate disorders such as autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other neurological conditions to identify underlying causes and potential treatment for conditions that affect cognitive function and neurological processes.
• Autoimmune Diseases – MMRI’s team investigates diseases like lupus, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and is dedicated to uncovering the root causes of chronic conditions where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.
