This holiday season, we are grateful for our community and those who have made it possible for MMRI scientists to continue their research.
Here are just a few highlights from MMRI’s impactful research in 2025:
· Dr. Maria Kontaridis published a transformative study in Science Signaling, identifying PTP1B, a key regulator of the heart’s energy balance, as a molecular switch that determines whether the heart uses fat or sugar as fuel.
· Dr. Matthew Nystoriak has uncovered groundbreaking insights into heart health in a study titled, Cardiac Ketone Body Oxidation Enhances Exercise Performance, published in Circulation Research.
· Dr. Tongbin Wu published a groundbreaking paper in Circulation Research identifying two essential heart-protecting proteins, RBPMS and RBPMS2.
· Dr. Chase Kessinger has received a major national grant to spend the next five years utilizing advanced imaging and novel treatment methods to enhance the detection and treatment of life-threatening blood clots in the lungs.
· Dr. Zhiqiang Lin secured an American Heart Association grant to advance urgently needed research on fatty liver disease.
· Dr. Jason McCarthy received a Department of Defense grant improve monitoring for transplant patients.
