May is Lupus Awareness Month! Lupus, or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a complex autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly targets healthy tissues, causing widespread inflammation and damage to organ systems throughout the body. Did you know that lupus disproportionately affects women? About 90% of lupus diagnosis are in women ages 15 to 44 (CDC). Though the exact cause of lupus is unclear, it is believed to be a result from genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. At MMRI, our research focuses on unraveling the causes of lupus to develop more effective treatment options and potentially cures for this debilitating condition.
To help raise awareness and support for the MMRI lupus research program, we invite you to join us at our 2nd annual Lupus Walk to be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, on the Masonic Care Community campus in Utica, NY. Your support is important now more than ever—whether you walk, sponsor, or donate, you will be helping to advance vital research and stand with those impacted by lupus.
