Local Army Veteran Receives Free Bath Makeover
James Dawes Selected as 5th Recipient of New York Sash Shower for a Soldier Giveaway
New York Sash is proud to announce that United States Army Veteran James Dawes of Madison, NY has been selected as the 5th annual recipient of the Shower for a Soldier Bath Makeover Giveaway. The project has recently been completed, providing Dawes with a brand-new bathroom space at no cost.
Dawes served in the United States Army for 25 years, including three tours of duty—two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. After returning home from active duty in 2014, he continued his service for an additional 11 years in the Army Reserve. Beyond his military career, Dawes has remained committed to his community through his involvement with the American Legion, where he previously served as Post Commander.
Like many veterans, Dawes faces ongoing health challenges, including PTSD related to his service and recent surgery for skin cancer. These challenges, combined with personal loss, made it difficult to prioritize necessary home improvements, including creating a safe and functional bathing space.
Nominated by his girlfriend, Carlee, Dawes was selected through New York Sash’s annual program, which honors local veterans experiencing hardships that make everyday tasks such as bathing difficult. Started in 2020 by New York Sash owner Scot Hayes, Shower for a Soldier has provided life-changing bathroom renovations to veterans across Central New York, with support from Bath Concepts, Inc.
“The bathing space serves as a source of self-care for James—a place where he can wash the bad day away, decompress, and find some peace,” Carlee shared in her nomination. “A bath makeover would be life-changing for us.”
New York Sash transformed the Dawes bathroom into a space focused on comfort, relaxation, and care. The newly completed deep soaking tub offers a place for rest and recovery, designed to support both physical and mental well-being.
Shortly after the installation was completed, Dawes and his family shared their gratitude, noting the new tub has already improved comfort, relaxation, and peace of mind at home.
“At New York Sash, giving back to our community is at the core of who we are,” said Jill Hayes, CEO of New York Sash. “Shower for a Soldier is our way of honoring local veterans like James, whose strength and service continue long after their time in uniform. We’re proud to provide a space that brings comfort, care, and peace of mind to him and his family.”
New York Sash will continue the Shower for a Soldier initiative, with nominations for the next recipient now open. Community members are encouraged to nominate a deserving local veteran by visiting www.newyorksash.com/soldier.
