The Landmarks Society of Greater Utica is holding its 2019 Holiday House event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Fuller House, 10169 Fuller Rd., Remsen. Admission is a $10 donation that will benefit the stabilization and renovation projects at the Rutger Park Mansions. No reservations are needed.
Visitors can tour the fully decorated Fuller House, built around 1815, while listening to holiday music and enjoying light refreshments. The home sits on just over two acres of land and has more than 4,000 square feet, and was purchased in 2017 by the Weaver family, who have generously opened their home this holiday season for exploring.
The Fuller House was built by Major Russell Fuller, a veteran of the War of 1812, Supervisor of the Town of Steuben (1813-1847), and New York State Assemblyman (1846). The building is made of limestone with stones drawn by oxen from the Prospect quarry in the Greek Revival style that was popular at the time. Its features include a black fireplace in a large drawing room with white Doric columns on each side and Greek key carving on the mantle and hearth, a dining room which extended the entire width of the house, and a kitchen with a fireplace and two deep brick Dutch ovens. The exposed early timber framework of the roof is still covered with tree bark, assembled with wood pegs, and shows ax marks.
