5/11/22 6-9 pm – “How to defuse a Bomb: The Project Children Story”

Movie and Discussion: “How to Defuse A Bomb” – When Irish native Denis Mulcahy and a handful of family and friends from Greenwood Lake, NY first established Project Children in 1975, they could not possibly have envisioned the heights to which the program would grow, nor the ultimate peace it would help broker.

On May 11th, Denis Mulcahy makes a rare upstate appearance, bringing with him the award-winning documentary film, “How to Defuse a Bomb: The Project Children Story.”  Filmed in 2017 and narrated by Liam Neeson, it is a great legacy to all who participated in Project Children, including host families, volunteers, the companies that employed interns and the many other Irish organizations that have helped along the way.

From its modest beginnings, Project Children ultimately brought over 20,000 Catholic and Protestant children to suburban US for summer-long visits where they forged unexpected friendships and found they had more in common with the “enemy” than they thought.

The title is more than a metaphor, as the force behind Project Children is Irish native Denis Mulcahy, who was at the time a member of the New York City Police Department’s Bomb Squad.  Denis has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping to bring peace to Northern Ireland.

The program is scheduled from 6-9 PM with introductions, showing the film and Q&A with Mr. Mulcahy in the ICC Event Center, and adjourning to the Five Points Pub for libations and photo ops.  There is no cost to attend, but donations are appreciated with all proceeds going to the Denis Mulcahy scholarship, which enables American youth to attend summer cultural courses in Ireland.
