Munson recently received a landmark $2 million estate gift from Dr. William L. Boyle, Jr., among the largest contributions to Munson since the founding family’s original donation. This remarkable bequest will power creative opportunities for generations to come.
Half of this gift will expand a scholarship fund established years ago by Boyle at Pratt Munson College of Art and Design, opening doors for talented students who might otherwise never pursue their artistic dreams. The remainder establishes a vital endowed fund supporting special projects and annual operations.
“Bill’s extraordinary generosity reflects his profound belief in Munson’s mission,” said Anna D’Ambrosio, Munson President and CEO. “This visionary gift will ignite creative possibilities for our entire community for decades to come.”
On April 6, Munson honored this legacy by dedicating the Museum’s former “2 East Gallery” as the “Dr. William L. Boyle, Jr. Gallery,” with profound thanks to this long-time friend of Munson who was a Munson trustee from 2008 until 2016, serving on advisory committees for the Museum of Art and School of Art. Boyle was a Munson member for more than 30 years.
A passionate educator throughout his life, Boyle served as President of both Keuka College and Curry College and on numerous hospital and non-profit boards. He generously established a professorship at Colgate University alongside his Munson contributions.
Born in Utica in 1934, Boyle cherished his childhood home and friends. He treasured all that Utica offered, enjoying spending his retirement years back home. His affection for our community is even reflected in the wording of his endowed scholarship: “It is hoped the recipients will return to the area after completing their baccalaureate degree.”
Gifts of this magnitude are essential for sustaining Munson’s programs and its three divisions—Museum of Art, School of Art, and Performing Arts. Boyle’s generous contribution demonstrates how planned giving creates an enduring legacy that touches countless lives through the power of the arts.
