Thelma Matthews, a residence manager at The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, has been named a 2020 Thomas A. Maul Direct Support Professional Excellence awardee. This award is presented annually to four direct support professionals throughout New York State employed by a chapter of The Arc New York statewide organization.

Awardees have displayed an exemplary level of performance throughout their career with a devotion to improving the quality of life for the people they support.
βWhen I started this job 18 years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would still be here,β said Matthews, who works in Glenfield and Lowville. βThis has become a very meaningful career. Looking back, I wouldnβt change a thing.β
Arc Oneida-Lewis CEO Karen Korotzer praised Matthews, saying, βThelma is an incredible person who is very upbeat and optimistic. We count on her daily. She is more than deserving of this award, and weβre very fortunate to have her at The Arc.β
Thelma will receive her award at a virtual meeting on October 1st. She becomes the second Arc, Oneida-Lewisβ employee to receive this honor in as many years with Deborah Fleming, a day habilitation specialist in Oneida county having won in 2019.
