The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live performance transmissions, continues at Munson with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Aida” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium in the Museum of Art. Tickets are $24 for Munson Members, $30 for the general public, and $15 for students and can be purchased by calling 315-797-0055, coming to the Munson welcome desk, or visiting munson.art/metlive.
Verdi’s “Aida,” the grandest of grand operas, features an epic backdrop for what is in essence an intimate love story. Set in ancient Egypt and packed with magnificent choruses, complex ensembles, and elaborate ballets, “Aida” never loses sight of its three protagonists. Few operas have matched “Aida” in its exploration of the conflict of private emotion and public duty, and perhaps no other has remained to the present day so unanimously appreciated by audiences and critics alike.
“Munson is proud to bring the magic of live opera to our community through The Met: Live in HD series,” said Bob Mortis, director of Performing Arts. “Each performance offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the thrill of world-class productions right here in our auditorium, and Verdi’s ‘Aida’ is a perfect example of opera at its most spectacular and moving.”
Soprano Angel Blue makes her long-awaited Met role debut as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and country, one of opera’s defining roles. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for Michael Mayer’s spectacular new staging, which brings audiences inside the towering pyramids and gilded tombs of ancient Egypt with intricate projections and dazzling animations. Mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi, following her 2024 debut in Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino,” is Aida’s Egyptian rival Amneris, and tenor Piotr Beczała is the soldier Radamès—completing opera’s greatest love triangle. The all-star cast also features baritone Quinn Kelsey as Amonasro and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Ramfis.
