SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) is excited to welcome Dr. Abdullah Eroglu as the university’s new Dean of the College of Engineering. Dr. Eroglu, a distinguished academic leader and researcher, brings a wealth of experience in engineering education, research, and industry collaboration to SUNY Poly. He began his tenure as a member of the President’s Cabinet on August 19.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Eroglu to SUNY Poly,” said President Dr. Winston Soboyejo. “He not only has an impressive academic and research portfolio, but also boasts significant experience in the semiconductor industry, a critical area in the future of this region and New York State. His insights will be invaluable to our faculty and students, and in the conversations our leadership team will have moving forward.”

“With a track record of success in academic program development and in securing research funding, Dr. Eroglu will be a welcome addition to SUNY Poly, and will continue to move the College of Engineering forward to meet the needs of our students and industry partners in the Mohawk Valley and Central New York,” said Provost Dr. Andrew Russell. “I’d also like to thank Dr. Michael Carpenter, who served as interim dean of the College of Engineering for the past five years. Under his leadership, the college saw unprecedented growth and he remains an integral part of many key initiatives and conversations on campus as he transitions to his new role of Vice President for Research.”

Dr. Eroglu comes to SUNY Poly from UMass Boston, where he was the Department of Engineering Chair. In that role, Dr. Eroglu led the development of new academic programs, including online programs and certificates, and initiated strategic industry partnerships resulting in successful fundraising events that benefited both his departments and the College. Since 2018, he has also served as an ABET Program Evaluator for Engineering programs.

Before his academic career, Dr. Eroglu spent over eight years in the semiconductor industry as a Lead Senior Radio Frequency (RF) Design Engineer at MKS Instruments, ENI Products in Rochester. He also held positions as a faculty fellow in the Fusion Energy Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN, and as a visiting scholar at the University of Gavle, Sweden.

Dr. Eroglu is a prolific researcher with more than 160 journal and conference papers, six books, and five patents. He has secured over $23 million in extramural funding as PI and co-PI from federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, and National Science Foundation as well as from industry. His research expertise includes RF/Microwave/THz Circuit Design, RF Amplifiers and topologies, RF Metrology, anisotropic and gyrotropic materials, and metamaterial devices and sensors. Dr. Eroglu serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has received numerous awards for his research accomplishments.

Dr. Eroglu received his M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1999 and 2004, respectively. He also has over nine years of experience in academic leadership as a Department Chair, where he excelled in developing academic programs, fostering student success, managing assessment and accreditation processes, promoting diversity, and enhancing multidisciplinary collaborations.
