The Met’s first-ever Live in HD transmission—the abridged, English-language version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute—is a classic holiday treat for audiences of all ages.
Tony Award–winner Julie Taymor (director of Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway) conjures a spellbinding staging, replete with a kaleidoscope of color and parades of puppetry in this delightful production from 2006. It tells the thrilling story of Prince Tamino and birdcatcher Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. A cast of standouts comes together to bring the charming story to life, featuring tenor Matthew Polenzani as the courageous Tamino and soprano Hera Hysesang Park as the virtuous Pamina. Rolando Villazón makes an exciting role debut as the lovable lout Papageno, alongside Kathryn Lewek as the fearsome Queen of the Night and Morris Robinson as her nemesis, Sarastro.
“This production of Mozart’s wonderfully whimsical fantasy opera, featuring dazzling puppets and a colorful setting, is a perfect introduction for young audiences to the amazing works that The Met offers each season, especially during the holiday season,” according to Bob Mortis, Munson’s Director of Performing Arts.
