Wish families, volunteers paying it forward by raising funds, awareness
Make-A-Wish Central New York and local supporters gathered today at the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce to kick off a month-long fundraising campaign called Wish Heroes. The virtual fundraiser takes place throughout April and culminates on World Wish Day, April 29th. The overall goal is to raise $50,000 in support of wishes for nearly 200 critically ill children throughout Make-A-Wish Central New York’s 15-county territory, which includes the Mohawk Valley.
Make-A-Wish Central New York President and CEO Diane Kuppermann spoke at the event, as did attorney Sarah Kelly, who represented campaign sponsor Sugarman Law Firm. Other speakers included longtime wish-granting volunteer Anna Rose Salerno, of Clinton, and wish mom Monica Tebo, of Clinton, whose six-year-old son Dominic experienced a wish to go to Walt Disney World in 2020. Monica presented a donation of $1,000, which was the result of a fundraising effort her family undertook this spring to give back.
Wish kid Derek Holmes, of Blossvale, shared his health journey and what it was like to receive his sports complex wish last year. The Holmes Family is paying it forward to other critically ill kids waiting for a wish through the Wish Heroes campaign.
