A November to Remember at the H.A.R.P. Museum: Youth Lunch & Learn Series
The H.A.R.P. Museum at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley is excited to announce a brand-new “Youth Lunch and Learn” series, inviting ALL young people to explore Irish arts and culture throughout November. These FREE classes offer hands-on learning in Irish dance, fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrán (Irish drum), and a special storytelling workshop on genealogy. Each class is led by expert instructors and designed to introduce students to the joys of Irish tradition and music—no experience required!
After each class, kids enjoy a FREE lunch!
Here’s the lineup of events for this immersive series:
Irish Fiddle Class
📅 Dates: Saturday, November 9th & Saturday, November 16th
🕒 Time: 10 AM – Noon
🎓 Instructor: Mike Hoke
Description: For aspiring musicians, this class introduces the basics of playing the Irish fiddle. Students will learn simple tunes with instructor guidance, and additional fiddles will be available for those without an instrument. Each two-hour class is capped at 10 students, so early registration is encouraged. Bringing a recording device is recommended to capture tips and tunes.
Tin Whistle Class
📅 Dates: Saturday, November 9th & Saturday, November 30th
🕒 Time: Noon – 1:30 PM
🎓 Instructor: Mike Carroll
Description: Students can explore the magic of the tin whistle, a fundamental instrument in Irish music, learning to read music and play a few beginner tunes. Each student will receive their own tin whistle and a beginner’s guidebook to take home! Each two-hour class is limited to 10 students; don’t forget to bring a recording device to capture the experience.
Bodhrán (Irish Drum) Class
📅 Date: Saturday, November 30th
🕒 Time: 11 AM – 12:30 PM
🎓 Instructor: Sue Romero
Description: For anyone interested in rhythm and percussion, this class will introduce the bodhrán, the traditional Irish drum. Sue Romero will cover the basics of bodhrán playing, from techniques to traditional beats. Students are encouraged to bring their own bodhrán, although extras will be available. Space is limited to 10 students, so advance registration is a must.
Family Stories, Genealogy & the Art of Storytelling
📅 Date: Saturday, November 16th
🕒 Time: Noon – 1:30 PM
🎓 Instructor: Patty Foley
Description: Thanksgiving is a time for family gatherings and sharing stories. In this unique workshop, students will gain tools to uncover family history and build their family tree. Armed with insights into genealogy and storytelling techniques, they’ll head to Thanksgiving primed to ask questions and gather memories from their loved ones. This class is limited to 20 students, so reserve a spot soon!
