The Oneida County Health Department, in collaboration with Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS), are offering a free, three-week series of Freshstart Smoking Cessation classes. Freshstart is an evidence-based program created by the American Cancer Society. The classes will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, November 4, 11 and 18, 2019, in the Sister Johanna Conference Room at the St. Elizabeth Campus, 2209 Genesee Street, Utica. Refreshments will be provided.
The Freshstart approach is geared toward helping participants increase their motivation to quit, learn effective approaches for quitting and guide them in making a successful quit attempt. The class provides essential information, skills for coping with cravings and group support. The program is open to all Oneida County residents 18 years and older.
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, but for someone who quits, the health benefits can begin as soon as 20 minutes after a person’s last cigarette.
