The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) Central New York Diabetes Education Program (CNY Diabetes) has been awarded full recognition from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) with a five-year recognition status.
“Research shows that the risk of developing diabetes can be reduced by almost 60 percent with successful completion of this program, and reduced by 70 percent for participants over the age of 60 years,” said Caroline Jacobus, MS, RN, CDES, director of CNY Diabetes. “Many insurance providers now cover eligible beneficiaries to attend the program including Medicare and Medicaid.”
CDC recognition provides the quality assurance measures by which an organization demonstrates its ability to effectively deliver this lifestyle change program. The DPRP provides equitable standards and operating guidelines that all providers follow in order to be fully recognized by the CDC.
“As the director of the Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program, it is immensely gratifying to see the science of diabetes prevention being implemented to improve the public’s health,” said Christopher Holliday, PhD, MPH, MA, FACHE, director of Diabetes Translation National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health promotion. “MVHS should be extremely proud of this accomplishment. It is programs like this that are turning the tide in the fight against the epidemic of type 2 diabetes. Thank you for all that you are doing and for your commitment to reducing the preventable burden of diabetes in the United States.”
