Munson Museum of Art will come to life in celebration of Spring Weekend with “Art in Bloom,” a presentation of spectacular locally produced floral creations inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. The exhibit is free for Munson Members and $5 for the general public.
This colorful, juried exhibit of designs by regional florists, design professionals, artists, and garden club members will be on view throughout the weekend: Friday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Guided tours will be offered at 1 p.m. each day and there will be a closing reception and awards presentation, including People’s Choice, at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
As part of Spring Weekend, violinist Tami Lee Hughes will perform “The Legacy Show: Celebrating African-American Composers” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Sinnott Family – Bank of Utica Auditorium. Hughes will perform classical music infused with blues, jazz, gospel, spirituals, and hip-hop alongside a stellar cast of classical and jazz artists, portraying themes of the Antebellum Period, Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights era, and modern times, and including poetry by authors such as Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Visual media representing significant facets of African American culture also will be on display. This event is $20 for Munson Members, $25 for the general public, and $15 for students, and is sponsored by Natalie L. Brown, LLC.
During this extraordinary weekend, view exceptional floral designs in the Museum’s galleries and the Art in Bloom pop-up shop. Attendees will also be able to enjoy special events and programs with their admission to the Art in Bloom, including:
- 11 a.m., Friday, April 5: Imperfectly Perfect: How to Garden in Impossible Places
- 1-3 p.m., Saturday, April 6: Visible Studio Workshop
- 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 7: Floral Arranging Demonstration
Several paid workshops will also take place that include “Art in Bloom” admission and materials, including:
- 2 p.m., Friday, April 5: Floral Design with Art in Bloom Designer Nat Levin ($66 Munson Members, $76 general public)
- 1-3 p.m., Saturday, April 6: Embroidered Floral Cup Cozy ($40 Munson Members, $50 general public)
- 1-3 p.m., Saturday, April 6: Needle Felted Spring Wildflower Meadow ($50 Munson Members, $60 general public)
Other highlights of the weekend include High Tea at the Terrace Café 2-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-3 p.m. Sunday, and the opening reception of the Pratt Munson First-Year Exhibition at 3 p.m. Friday in the Pratt Munson Gallery in Fountain Elms.
