Officials at the Boilermaker Road Race announced the opening of the application period for the Access Program presented by Wolfspeed. Launched in 2022, the Access Program strives to improve access to the Boilermaker’s namesake events by reducing financial barriers. The core tenets of the program focus on eliminating barriers in three areas: access to the Boilermaker’s second-Sunday-in-July events, access to appropriate footwear, and access to training resources and groups.
Made possible through a long-standing partnership with Wolfspeed, the Boilermaker will provide a select number of runners with a complimentary entry into any of this year’s events, including the world-renowned 15K presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and 5K presented by Utica National.
Sneakers, along with a thorough shoe-fitting process, are provided on an as-needed basis through a partnership with New Hartford run-specialty shop The Sneaker Store. A self-directed training program designed to get participants ready to run safely ahead of the July 14, 2024 races, as well as information on local run groups is provided to accepted applicants.
“Running is said to be a simple sport – throw on a pair of shoes, step outside, and go – but we know that it’s often not that easy,” said Mark Donovan, Boilermaker president. “Participating in races can feel frivolous if resources are limited and well-fitting, quality sneakers can be expensive. Through the Access Program, we hope to give everyone, regardless of financial limitations, the ability to experience the transformative benefits of road racing.”
The Access Program is one of several programs offered by the Boilermaker with the goal of promoting health and well-being in the local community. Current programs include the Charity Bib Program presented by Wolfspeed, the Boilermaker Community Garden, and various youth programs throughout the year.
