For the First time since 1981, the Adirondack Railroad ran from Thendara Station to Tupper Lake. On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, a special train left Thendara Station near Old Forge at 11:00 AM, to travel on the recently completed reconstruction of the New York State-owned trackage.
2022 is the 130th anniversary year of the first passenger train operated by the Mohawk and Malone Railroad that arrived in Tupper Lake on July 16, 1892. The train included the dome car, dining car, and first-class cars. A light lunch and refreshments will be offered while traveling in both directions and volunteer docents, members of our Society, answered questions for guests.
Events at the Tupper Lake Depot included a welcome by community leaders, a ribbon cutting, a photo op, and short remarks by invited guests, plus an optional tour of the Tupper Lake community, recently awarded a $10 million Development Renewal Incentive Grant by New York State.
Adirondack Railroad staff and volunteers have donated more than 500,000 hours to protect and refurbish our historic railway and enrich the Adirondack experience for residents and visitors to our region.
The Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, Inc. (ARPS) operates the Adirondack Railroad. It is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer-based organization with main offices in Utica, New York. Since 1992 it has provided a successful tourist attraction, operating on the former New York Central Adirondack Division located in upstate New York.
