Bassett Healthcare Network Partnering with University of Rochester to Offer Free Program to Help People Quit Smoking
Thanks to a partnership between Bassett Research Institute and the University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare Network is now offering access to Wilmot’s free Smoking Cessation Program to all residents of the Central New York Region.
Quit Center is a free six-month smoking cessation program for cigarette smokers (not vape or e-cigarettes), aged 21 years and older, who want to quit smoking and who live in the Bassett Healthcare Network / Wilmot catchment area
Phone counseling with a tobacco treatment specialist includes the following:
- A baseline assessment call that can last up to 60 minutes to create a quit plan, including setting a quit date, discussing previous quit attempts, smoking patterns and triggers, and obtaining nicotine replacement therapy.
- A follow-up phone call to check on receipt of the nicotine replacement order, and to make sure the participant is ready for their quit date.
- Follow-up call(s) to see how the participant is doing.
- NOTE: Participants can always call if they need anything between follow-up calls.
In addition to phone calls, participants will receive 12 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy such as patches, gum, or lozenges (participant’s choice) shipped to their home, and six months of text message support and encouragement.
Those with questions or who are interested in participating should email Melinda Robinson at melinda.robinson@bassett.org.
