The Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon recognize April as Autism Awareness, Acceptance and Appreciation Month; a time to raise awareness and help our community accept and appreciate individuals with autism and the contributions they provide, while empowering individuals with autism and their families.

 

Individuals with autism often have challenges with social interaction and communication, but this does not mean they do not want to be involved! They want to have friends, be invited to join groups and activities, and be given equal opportunities for education and gainful employment. They want to be accepted and appreciated. Let’s join together and celebrate our differences as we strive to create a fully inclusive community where individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities live fully in all areas of life.

 

On April 1^st Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon signed a proclamation recognizing the millions of people living with autism. “During the month of April, we strive to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and help ensure every individual living with autism has the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. The Resource Center for Independent Living has provided invaluable support, resources and advocacy for countless individuals with disabilities and their families, which is why I am proud to present them with a Proclamation recognizing April as Autism Awareness, Acceptance and Appreciation Month,” Assemblywoman Buttenschon (D-Utica/Rome) stated.

 

RCIL provides vital services and supports so that individuals with autism and their families have the resources they need to live fully in all areas of life. LIFE at RCIL Advocates are able to provide active support and guidance to ensure that an individual’s choices for living independently are respected. Information is power, our Advocates work to ensure that you have all the information you need to be able to make well informed choices and take control of your own life. Self-Direction services can help ensure that individuals have supports in place that are best for them. Educational Advocates are available to ensure that students and parents have the tools for educational success, and Supported Employment programs help ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to competitive integrated employment.
